kentucky derby 2011

The Kentucky Derby itself is popular enough that when we hear the phrase followed by "festival", we can't help but get excited. An annual tradition, just like the race, the festival is an exciting events for those lucky enough to live in Kentucky.

Festival Events

Held in Louisville Kentucky during the two weeks before the Derby, the festival is the state's largest single annual event. Festivities invlude the Thunder Over Louisville; the largest annual fireworks display in North America, the Grand Balloon Race, the Great Steamboat Race; which features the famous Belle of Louisville, the Pegasus Parade; one of the United States' largest parades, and the Derby Marathon and mini-Marathon. Though this year, the marathons (both mini and full), feature a new route.

The 2011 Kentucky Derby Festival Theme

Every year, the festival has a theme that people are always all-too excited to hear. This year's has finally been revealed, and it is going to be super! Superhero that is. The theme is "Superfest", which introduces a character named Super Festival Fan. This character is to be included in all of the festival's advertisements and will be the face of the Kentucky Derby for all 2011 publications. Every March, pins come out that include a logo representing the theme, and this year they will feature a super look. Resembling a shield, there will be a big "F" on them, which stands for festival.

Looks like the Kentucky Derby Festival is joining the national obsession with super heroes. No doubt, it will attract plenty of festival-goers in Superman and Spiderman garb. Either way, it only adds to the festivities, and if people weren't already pumped up for the fast-approaching festival (which is doubtful), then they most definitely are now. Here's to the Festival, and to starting the famous Derby with a super bang!

Mark loves a good horse race. He is a writer and racing fanatic. He spends most of the year preparing for his annual kentucky derby party.
